Exemplary Employee Award Winners

Janice Kowemy, INLP Program Specialist

Janice has shown consistent dedication, leadership and creativity in her efforts to provide exemplary service to campus users of the Indigenous Nations Library Program in her role as Program Specialist. She organizes and presents multiple events each semester that are seasonal and themed which brings new and returning users to the INLP area, promoting the Indigenous collections and research services available in a fun way. Janice goes beyond her assigned duties specifically in support of the INLP student employees. She is a kind and thoughtful supervisor who recognizes each student’s unique skills, delegating tasks that align with their strength areas. Our colleagues may not know the depth and breadth of the expertise Janice brings to the college as a tribal library director in her tribal community and as a leader in professional organizations such as the American Indian Library Association, NM Library Association, and as a Bingo Pro! Janice contributes to the welcoming and supportive environment we strive for in INLP, supporting campus and community members in their research in Indigenous areas and being a supportive supervisor for our student employees.

Brenton Woodward, Data & Digital Publishing Manager, UNM Press

Brenton consistently exceeds expectations and is a vital part of the office culture. He is a trusted resource for colleagues, always willing to provide support, solve problems, and improve systems. Known for his extensive knowledge, dedication, and willingness to take on training and mentoring responsibilities beyond his role, he helps others succeed and fosters a positive work environment. His exceptional commitment, teamwork, and impact make him highly deserving of recognition and an outstanding candidate for the Exemplary Employee Award.

Project Implementation Award Winners

Vera Clyne, Brandon Gonzales, John Matthews, and Amy Zuverink for their work on the SMS Texting Evening Pilot

In Summer 2025, Amy Zuverink, Library Reference and Information Services Coordinator, led an initiative to expand SMS reference service hours and address coverage gaps during off-hours. Working with Zimmerman Extended Hours staff—John Matthews, Brandon Gonzales, and Vera Clyne—the team developed a sustainable service model that extended evening reference support while balancing other operational responsibilities. Their collaboration, flexibility, and ongoing feedback helped make the pilot a success, with 13% of Fall 2025 SMS reference tickets received during the newly extended hours. As a result, the service became a permanent offering beginning in Spring 2026. Congratulations to our Project Implementation Award winners for their dedication to improving access to library services and supporting our patrons.

Bright Idea Award 

Samuel Sisneros for his work on the NM Spanish Language Archival Recovery Project

Samuel Sisneros is the recipient of the Bright Idea Award for his visionary leadership of the New Mexico Spanish Language Archival Recovery Project. This innovative initiative has digitized hundreds of at-risk audio recordings, preserving vital New Mexico Spanish language and culture. By combining technical expertise, cross-campus collaboration, and a community-centered approach, the project transforms fragile analog archives into accessible digital resources that support language preservation, research, and cultural continuity. Samuel’s work sets a new standard in archival innovation and community engagement.
